Co-operation continues to expand Logica opts for IT Mill’s RIA programming tool
Logica’s communal services business unit for the whole of Finland is renewing its web application interfaces to utilize IT Mill’s RIA and Ajax technologies. In this way product development is enhanced and the usability and data security of applications improved. In addition to bringing about better customer service for municipalities and their residents, the new development will also provide immediate cost savings as digitalisation progresses in the public administration. The RIA solutions of Logica, the pioneer of municipal digitalization in Finland, ensures a non-reliance on technology bases which enhances product development as ways of working and development models are consolidated. According to Logica’s Service Director Kati Siikonen, the concept is to develop all municipal services from Social Services to Economic Administration and Human Resources using a common tool. This facilitates the utilisation of the same RIA interface in both administration and the provision of services, which means the beneficiaries are municipal staff as well as municipal residents. IT Mill’s RIA technology was selected for implementing the assurance of this usability. The Finnish IT Mill RIA development toolkit is entirely based on the use of an open source code and it is possible to work using only the Java programming language. The new IT Mill Toolkit 5 is the only RIA interface on the market that provides server-specific development using the Java language throughout. - We have great confidence in the competence of IT Mill. We have been very happy with the work they have done, Siikonen says. Logica has also used IT Mill’s RIA tools in the past. Usability and cost savings
RIA technology improves the usability of web applications. Applications and services are available in a consolidated form for users, and the systems work together better than ever before. Furthermore, the IT Mill tool is not dependent on the workstation, and there is no need to update a complete webpage for each change or function. Data security is also a key issue: the application code is located in the server, not the browser. - As electronic services become a part of everyday life, the usability of applications and systems is of vital importance, as the number of users is not only on the increase but they are also becoming more heterogeneous. The development toolkit based on IT Mill RIA technology helps us to cater to these new requirements: the usability of applications and systems needs to be second to none, Siikonen stresses. As using the RIA toolkit makes use and development of various applications, such as customer service more flexible, this improvement in services also provides cost savings for Logica and direct savings to the municipalities and residents. At the same time, the possibility to transfer resources to new facilities that require such is facilitated. - I believe that Logica’s systematic input into the development of even better interfaces will further strengthen the status of the company’s products on the market, adds CEO of IT Mill Joonas Lehtinen.
